Help! My horse is a brat in the washstall!!?
I get more of a shower than my large morgan pony does! He's ok entering the washstall and everything but will sometimes run out into the neighboring barn into an open stall and grab a snack. He doesn't like water at all, as you can probably tell. He's ok showering him on his left side but doing his right side, oh my goodness is he a nightmare! I'll be showering his body and he'll move his hind-quarters over into me and pin me against the wall and i'll ask him to move by pushing my thumb into his side to get him to move away from the pressure but he doesn't respond. It's so hard to punish him and have an effect on him when he's such a strong morgan. Any ideas of how i can get him to behave? Please i'm getting tired of getting soaking wet and frustrated every bath!
my horse is always tied up when i'm showering him. what i mean when he gets out is that when i'm bringing him in the washstall, and in the process of tying him up, he'll take off into the adjacent barn,
If your barn has one, try using one of the narrow wash racks that has the bars on either side and the front and the butt chain. Like this: http://www.goldenstatecorrals.com/contenido/eng/9_wash_rack.htm
Make sure he doesn't get too sared, talk to him and maybe even feed him treats periodically to keep him occupied. Start with the right side, and do a small portion, then move to the left, then go back to the right and do some more until you are all done. He may have had a traumatic experience, so give him lots of reward and don't go about it in a forceful manner.
