Does anyone know of challenging and thought-provoking plays (NON-MUSICAL) for high school actors to perform?
First things first. Our Town is off the board. Too overdone. Musicals are also a no-go. Shakespeare is a possibility but may be too sophisticated for our community. It would have to be a toned-down adaptation. Finally, I NEED TO HAVE A FEMALE LEAD IN THIS ONE, with more than 15 cast members in all (a pretty good mix of male and female).
PAST SHOWS (during my time): The Crucible, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Rebel Without A Cause, and Don Quixote
I have a great group of seniors next year. I want to send them off with a BANG. Sets and costumes are not a problem, but lighting can be a challenge.
This is going to be our Spring Show (on Mother's Day weekend), so I would prefer (regrettably) something on the tame side. 
However, I want something challenging, thought-provoking, and well-known (at least in the theatrical world). I am not into fluffy, cheesey crap. Kids need REAL theatre.

Wow- I was about the say Crucible when I read you'd already done it. Good for you for not "dumbing it down" for them- highschool kids deserve challenging material.
How about some Tenessee Williams? Big casts, strong women- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof would be cool- though would it be too racy for your described audience? Philidephia Story is fun- though not exactly "deep" as much as romantic.
Go to dramatists.com or samuelfrench.com and plug in the number of cast members you need to fill and they will compile a list of all the plays that fit your criteria- the one on dramatists "play finder" is really good. Good luck.
OH- Let me also add "Cherry Orchard" since you mentioned Shakespeare (you seemed to be interested in the classics)- Chekhov may be a little easier to cut down and lord knows its challenging enough- and talk about awesome female roles- theres at least 3 amazing ones.
