how do I identify a type of hard plastic? bakelite or lucite or other?
the item is actually an old toilet seat and cover. marked "sears" it has no other markings. it is an ivory color with swirls like what you might see in a bowling ball. I know some older plastic items if made of a certain material might be worth something.
the toilet itself is from 1942 and works well, has a great classic design. the seat and cover might not be from the 40's, it's hard to tell. I do know that the little "rests" where the seat hits the bowl are in a way "rotting" they're not in good shape.
thanks for the help
.
The referenced sources describe simple tests (swaps with 409 that turn yellow, warm water to cause a slight odor of vinegar, and so on) to identify Bakelite, Lucite, Celluloid, and other plastics. Apparently, these materials are used in antique jewelry where testing is often needed to authenticate the material and/or age of the jewelry.
