HOME $26.96 Internationally renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand makes his feature directorial debut with this environmentally conscious documentary produced by Luc Besson, and narrated by Glenn Close. Shot in 54 countries and 120 locations over 217 days, Home presents the many wonders of planet Earth from an entirely aerial perspective. As such, we are afforded the unique opportunity to witness our changing environment from an entirely new vantage point. In our 200,000 years on Earth, humanity has hopelessly upset Mother Nature’s delicate balance. Some experts claim that we have less than ten years to change our patterns of consumption and reverse the trend before the damage is irreversible. Produced to inspire action and encourage thoughtful debate, Home poses the prospect that unless we act quickly, we risk losing the only home we may ever have. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

HOME SWEET HOME $17.96 Stan (Eric Richard), Gordon (Timothy Spall), and Harold (Tim Barker) are postmen who work together as they sort the mail each morning before they go on their rounds. They chat a little about their home lives, and Harold tells terrible riddles and recites song lyrics in a monotone. Harold dotes on his wife, June (Su Elliot), but she’s clearly an unhappy woman, and is constantly telling him to leave her alone. Gordon’s house is on Stan’s route, so Gordon tells his wife, Hazel (Kay Stonham), to invite Stan in for tea when he comes around. She does, but the vivacious woman seems to have more than tea on her mind as she gives Stan a tour of the house, with an emphasis on the bedroom. She suggests that Stan come by for Sunday dinner some time. An overbearingly cheerful social worker, Melody (Frances Barber of Sammy and Rosie Get Laid), shows up at Stan’s door and harangues him into spending more time with his estranged teenage daughter, Tina (Lorraine Brunning). Tina’s been in foster care for years, ever since Stan’s wife ran off. Stan is a busy man, chatting up his co-workers’ wives and picking up women at the launderette, but eventually he makes time for a visit. Encouraged by this progress, Melody coerces Stan into bringing Tina home for a weekend. He decides to bring her over to dinner at Gordon and Hazel’s, and it soon devolves into a horrific evening, made all the more awkward by an unexpected visit from June. Home Sweet Home, devised and directed by Mike Leigh, was originally shown as part of the BBC’s Play for Today series. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide |

HOME FOR LIFE $26.96 This compelling documentary concerns some of the residents of Chicago’s Drexel Home. The retirement home caters to wealthy Jews who are in need of assisted living and medical care. The feature is a big slice of cinéma và rité, illustrating the fears and concerns of the elderly regardless of religious faith or income. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide |

Home Movie $26.96 The old saying has it that a person’s home is their castle, and this documentary takes a witty look at five unusual homes that have been designed to match the ideas and eccentricities of the people who own them. Ben Skora is a self-styled inventor who has tricked out his Illinois home with a variety of unusual gadgets, among them a nine-foot-tall robot. Linda Beach, an American actress who enjoyed a successful career in Japanese television, lives in a tree house in Hawaii that draws its power from a nearby waterfall. Bill Tragle’s home is also close to the water, as the Louisiana alligator rancher shows off his luxurious houseboat. Ed Pedan and his wife Diana Pedan have made a home out of an abandoned underground complex in Kansas, built and then abandoned by the American military. And Bob Walker and Francis Mooney designed their home not with their own needs in mind, but those of their 11 pet cats. Directed by Chris Smith, who previously made the acclaimed documentaries American Job and American Movie, Home Movie had its premiere at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide peoples’ relationships to their surroundings. Hilarious and often moving, HOME MOVIE is a successful addition to an oeuvre that marks the director as one of America’s most talented and important cultural observers. |

HOME FRONT $17.96 One soldier’s brave struggle to put his life back together after receiving serious injuries in Iraq is explored in this documentary. Jeremy Feldbusch was a healthy, strapping 21-year-old Army Ranger when he was shipped off to fight in Iraq in 2003. A few months later, Feldbusch was struck in the head with a large piece of shrapnel during battle; the injury left Feldbusch blind and with irreversible brain damage. Upon returning home, Feldbusch found himself living with his parents, who have worked with their son to reacclimatize him to the things he used to do, including skiing, cycling, hunting and chopping wood. With Feldbusch receiving limited financial support from the military, his parents must pay for his care and therapy out of their own pockets, and while Feldbusch remains proud of his military service (and supportive of the war in Iraq), he’s become a spokesman for the Wounded Warrior Project, a veterans’ group which is lobbying for increased financial support to programs providing therapy for injured soldiers. Home Front is a documentary which profiles Feldbusch’s life before and after his hitch in Iraq as well as the goals of the Wounded Warrior Project. Home Front received its world premier at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |

Home Of The Brave $17.96 A documentary that explores a little-remembered event in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, HOME OF THE BRAVE tells the story of Viola Liuzzo, the only white woman murdered during the struggle. Liuzzo traveled from her home in Detroit to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965 to take part in a march, and was shot dead for her efforts. The case made headlines around the country, and President Lyndon Johnson told the FBI to make finding her killers one of its top priorities. However, the trial of a group of Ku Klux Klan members for her murder ended without a conviction. This documentary takes another look at the case and its evidence, including some disturbing information about the FBI’s investigation, and focuses attention on Liuzzo’s children many years afterwards, who are all linked by a massive distrust of the government and its institutions. HOME OF THE BRAVE explores both a forgotten event of the Civil Rights movement as well as examining how the government often fails to protect its citizens. |

HOME FOR CHRISTMAS $13.46 Home for Christmas is a made-for-television film about a young girl who wants a grandfather for Christmas. She chooses an elderly, homeless ex-con (Mickey Rooney) as her pseudo-grandfather and he teaches her and her family–as well as his long-estranged son–the true meaning of Christmas. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide |

Stealing Home $9.99 The storytelling device of the flashback gets an intense workout in this tragic coming-of-age drama. Mark Harmon stars as washed-up baseball player Billy Wyatt, who is shocked when he receives news that his childhood sweetheart and friend Katie Chandler (Jodie Foster) has committed suicide and left the disposal of her ashes to his judgment. Although Billy and Katie have not kept in touch through the years, he has always carried a torch for her, his first love. On his way home, Billy recalls his past associations with the free-spirited Katie: their first meeting, the time they made love, and conversations they had, mostly during summers at the New Jersey shore. Billy also remembers the adolescent mischief he got into with his best friend, Alan Appleby (played by Jonathan Silverman in the flashbacks, Harold Ramis in the present-day), like when each of them ended up sleeping with other’s prom date. Billy finally decides to cast Katie’s ashes to the wind in the place where they were happiest, by the seashore. Stealing Home was reportedly based on the real-life experiences of its writers, former Second City troupe members and WKRP in Cincinnati writers Steven Kampmann and Will Aldis. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide |

Home of the Brave $13.46 As their tour of duty in Iraq draws to a close, four American soldiers learn that they are scheduled to embark on one final, fateful mission that will forever change their concept of war. Shortly after receiving the news that they will soon be reunited with their families back in the United States, a unit serving in Iraq is deployed on a humanitarian mission to deliver medical supplies to a remote Iraqi village. Upon arriving in the village, the unit is viciously ambushed and many lives are lost. Now, as the surviving members of the battalion return home and attempt to readjust to civilian life, the physical injuries and psychological scars sustained during that tragic event continue to take a heavy emotional toll on the war-torn soldiers. Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Biel, and rapper-turned-actor 50 Cent star in an affecting psychological war drama from Academy Award-winning director Irwin Winkler. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide grief, and while he may not reach the heights of Oliver Stone’s BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY or Michael Cimino’s THE DEER HUNTER, he draws on similar frustrations felt by the characters in those movies. HOME OF THE BRAVE was shot while the violence still raged in Iraq, which will doubtless make it a fascinating curio in years to come, especially as this denied Winkler a distance from his subject that many of the filmmakers who masterfully dissected the Vietnam War undoubtedly benefited from. |

Close to Home $22.46 Life as a teenage girl in Israel isn’t easy. Just ask Smadar (Smadar Sayar) and Mirit (Naama Schendar), two 18-year-olds who spend their workdays wearing fatigues as officers in the Israeli Army. Vidi Bilu and Dalia Hagar’s CLOSE TO HOME addresses the challenging concept of a country in which young women are forced to perform military service amidst the trials and tribulations of teenage confusion. Smadar is a rebellious type who clearly has issues letting people get close to her. Meanwhile, Mirit is as by-the-book as they come. When they’re paired together to patrol the streets of Jerusalem and perform random I.D. searches on those who look suspicious (i.e., any and all Arabs), it looks like they’re never going to get along. Gradually, they begin to warm up to each other, and a sisterly bond develops. But ultimately the strain of trying to balance personal issues with the stress of being soldiers causes them to rethink their friendship forever. Clearly a subject close to Bilu and Hagar’s hearts, CLOSE TO HOME is, at its core, a universal story about budding womanhood. But placed in a military context, the stakes are even higher, and the levels run even deeper. Both Sayar and Schendar deliver superb performances, capturing their characters’ constantly shifting emotional states with flawless accuracy. |

Back Home $17.96 A remake of the 1989 British TV movie of the same name (which itself was based on a novel by Michelle Magorian), the 2001 production of Back Home starred Sarah Lancashire as Peggy Dickinson, the role essayed in the original film by Hayley Mills. At the outbreak of WWII, Peggy and her husband, Roger (Adrian Lukis), make certain that their daughter, Virginia (Jessica Fox), is safely evacuated to the U.S. while they busy themselves with war work. Serving in the WVS (Women’s Voluntary Service), Peggy enjoys a degree of liberation hitherto unknown to her, billeted in a luxurious mansion and serving as driver for several urbane military officers; meanwhile, Roger trudges along as an ordinary soldier. At war’s end, Peggy feels out of touch with her former life, Roger is unable to adjust to peacetime conditions, and Virginia has become far too Americanized to be satisfied with her parents’ existence. Back Home was first televised in the U.K. on October 22, 2001. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

Home on the Range $17.96 Disney presents the animated musical Western Home on the Range, featuring an original musical score by Alan Menken. The Little Piece of Heaven family farm is about to go under and outlaw cattle rustler Alameda Slim (voice of Randy Quaid) sets his sights on it. Three dairy cows — tough Maggie (voice of Roseanne), leader Mrs. Calloway (voice of Judi Dench), and naïve Grace (voice of Jennifer Tilly) — team up to save the farm. Along with ambitious stallion Buck (voice of Cuba Gooding Jr.), helpful rabbit Lucky Jack (voice of Charles Haid), and other helpful barnyard friends, the cows set out to capture Alameda Slim and collect the reward money. However, a vicious bounty hunter (voice of Charles Dennis) is also after Slim. The film features vocal performances by Bonnie Raitt, k.d. lang, and Tim McGraw. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide self-appointed bounty hunters to win the $750 prize for Slim’s capture. Along the way they lock horns with the sheriff’s horse Buck (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) who, in the end, helps them save the day. Catchy music by Bonnie Raitt and K.D. Lang adds to the fun-filled adventure of HOME ON THE RANGE, a movie that is sure to please family members of all ages. |

HOME MOVIE $17.96 Upon realizing that their two young children are inherently evil, a pair of desperate suburban parents resign themselves to the fact that all they can do is document the youngsters’ cruelty on camera for all the world to see. A first-person shocker shot in the pseudo-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project and Diary of the Dead, Home Movie tells the chilling story of the Poe family, a middle class, suburban clan living in upstate New York. Clare Poe (Cady McClain) is a psychiatrist, and her husband David (Adrian Pasdar) is a Lutheran minister. Clare recently purchased a video camera to document her sessions, but when children Jack and Emily (real-life brother and sister Austin and Amber Williams) begin displaying some seriously disturbing behavior, the concerned mother can’t resist the temptation to make some home movies. At first the footage seems fairly benign, but then young Jack hurls a rock at his father’s face. Later, after Emily interrupts a tender moment by slaughtering a frog, a conversation between the parents reveals that the children have always been violent, and their anti-social behavior is getting worse by the day. When religion and medicine fail, the situation turns critical, prompting Clare to try some home counseling with her children as the patients. But it’s already too late for Jack and Emily, and now the most that Clare and David can hope to accomplish is to document every moment of the madness so others can understand the true extent of their suffering. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Home for the Holidays $13.46 It’s been said that while most people love their families, they don’t always like them very much, and that emotional dividing line is the heart of this comedy directed by Jodie Foster. Claudia Larson (Holly Hunter) usually approaches family reunions with a certain trepidation, but as she prepares to fly from her home in Chicago to her parent’s place in Baltimore for Thanksgiving, she is more apprehensive than usual. Claudia has just lost her job, she’s not feeling at all well, and her teenage daughter, Kitt (Claire Danes), who is staying behind, informs Claudia on the way to the airport that she plans to use the weekend to lose her virginity with her boyfriend. The family festivities are already under way when Claudia arrives at the home of her mother, Adele (Anne Bancroft), and father, Henry (Charles Durning). Claudia’s brother, Tommy (Robert Downey Jr.), whose homosexuality is tolerated without being discussed on a practical basis, has brought along his new friend Leo Fish (Dylan McDermott). Tommy doesn’t get along well with his fussbudget sister, Joanne (Cynthia Stevenson), who wears her self-sacrifice like a badge of honor, and he simply hates her husband, Walter (Steve Guttenberg), who has often been the target of Tommy’s barbed sense of humor. While the siblings and in-laws struggle to remain civil, their quite eccentric aunt Gladys (Geraldine Chaplin) arrives; she insists on discussing her digestive problems, and after a few drinks, she confesses her long-ago lust for Henry. Home for the Holidays was Jodie Foster’s second film as a director, and the first in which she didn’t also star. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |

Road Home, The $26.96 Following on the heels of director Zhang Yimou’s Not One Less (1999), which won the top prize at the 1999 Venice Film Festival, comes this sensitively-wrought portrait of a young woman’s unshakable love. The film opens in the present, shot in gritty black and white, as businessman Luo Yusheng (Sun Honglei) returns to his hometown in the rural Hebei province to attend the funeral of his father. When Luo suggests that the coffin should be brought home from the hospital on a tractor, his aging mother Zhao Di (Zhao Yuelin) rebuffs him, insisting that they conform to custom and have it carried home by local men. Later, as Luo recalls his parent’s courtship, the film switches to color and travels back in time about 40 years. A young, beautiful Zhao Di (Zhang Ziyi) find herself falling for the village’s handsome new teacher Luo Changyu (Zheng Hao). As the males in the village join together to build a school for the burg, Zhao Di helps the other women prepare food, waiting patiently to meet the strapping educator. Just as their romance begins, Luo is suddenly ordered to leave by the Communist authorities. As Luo packs up and leaves the village, Zhao Di races hither and thither carrying his favorite steamed dumplings, hoping to catch him before he departs. Though the odds of reunion seem slim, Zhao Di steadfastly holds vigil for her lover until miraculously, Luo returns under the cover of the night only to be once again ordered to the city where he has been commanded to stay. The pair are forced to wait another two years until they can be together. This film won the prestigious Silver Bear at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival and the World Cinema Audience Award at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival; the victories were all the more sweet for the director, as The Road Home was rejected outright from the 1999 Cannes Film Festival, prompting Zhang to angrily withdraw his Not One Less from competition. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide |

Peter Pan (Fully Restored 45th Anniversary Limited Edition) (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) [VHS] $9.89 Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instills an element of childlike wonder. The 1953 version of James M. Barrie’s story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie’s wondrous focus on child’s play is the key to its longevity: kids who don’t grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic… |
