How to find the thickness of a gold leaf using dimensional analysis?
i need this for chemistry and just can't get it right.
Pure Gold can be made into extremely thin sheets called gold leaf. If 50 kg of gold is made into gold leaf having an area of 3620 meters squared, how thick is the gold leaf in micrometers
What is needed is the density of the gold, which does not change, no matter the shape of the sample. Density is the mass of a given substance per unit volume. For gold, this value is 19.30 g/cm³, which is easily found from many sources.
There are 1000g per kg, so the volume of 50 kg of gold, in cubic centimeters is:
(50 kg) (1000 g/kg) / (19.30 g/cm³) = 2590.67 cm³.
Notice how the kg and g units cancel, leaving the cm³ units in the answer. This is the dimensional analysis.
The volume of a leaf can be defined as the area (square units) times the thickness (linear units). Let's find the thickness of the leaf in meters first. Since there are 100 centimeters per meter, then there are 100² cm² per m², and 100³ cm³ per m³; dimensional analysis allows us to do this. The volume of the leaf in square meters is:
(2590.67 cm³) / (100³ cm³/m³) = 0.0259 m³
The thickness in meters is:
(0.0259 m³) / (3620 m²) = 7.15x10^-7 m.
Since there are a million (10^6) micrometers per meter, the thickness of the foil is:
(7.15x10^-7 m) (10^6 μm/m) = 0.715 μm, the answer.
This all could have been combined into one calculation:
[(50 kg)(1000 g/kg)(10^6 μm/m)] / [(3620 m²)(19.30 g/cm³)(100³ cm³/m³)] = 0.715 μm.
Again, notice how all the units cancel to give the final answer units. Doing dimensional analysis helps guide calculations without memorizing too many equations.
