Is vanity *really* a sin?
When one appreciates the impression one makes, is it really a sin to do so, when the register of that impression is entirely in the hands of other persons? In simpler terms, why is it a sin to appreciate in oneself what may be freely appreciated by other people?
After all, if one brightens up the world with one's visage, should this be counted a sin to simply be cognizant of the fact? If this sounds a bit arrogant, I must beg pardon--it is quite clear that I have no great command of the written word; thus, I stumble along in my faltering fashion, graceless and lacking in all eloquence.
I might point out as an aside, too, that there are many types of vanity.
