Floating vanity with vessell sink.... is a wood top okay?
Im looking to build a double vanity. I love the look of the floating vanities with vessell sinks. But it seems that every pic i look at the sinks are just on the wood top. Do I dare build like that? Do I have to treat the top with something? What about wood look products like melamine? If none of this works what should I use for the top? something i can put holes in for sure.
Wood will work and work well if it's properly sealed. In wet areas, you need to use polyurethane of some type and apply several coats. And it wouldn't hurt to train those who use that sink to wipe up water puddles as they create them.
I have used wood for my kitchen counters, including around the sink. We sealed the planks as we put them down with clean caulk, wiping up the excess as we went and then finished the surface with numerous coats of tung oil. It's been down for a good 7 years and has held up quite well. We have an old 100 year old house and the wood counters compliment the house well. The advantage of tung oil over poly is when you get a nick or a scratch, it's much easier to repair. With poly, you have to strip/sand the entire surface and start over clean. With the tung oil, you can do spot repairs and blend the repair into the rest.
And you could always do a tile top. Stone, granite (cheaper way to get the granite look), glass tiles would all work. Glass tiles are really hot right now and are not showing any signs of cooling off. Granite can be touchy; it does mark and stain. Same with marble. You really have to keep those properly sealed so you don't run into issues.
