What is the best 5 lever mortice lock? There are chrome or brass effect ones in B&Q. Whats the strongest?
Also what do the measurements 67mm and 80mm refer to when you look at locks on the internet? I'm (obviously) new to this and want a secure front door!
You should buy a 5-lever mortice lock that conforms to BS3621. This is the standard that insurance companies recommend. Locks made to this standard cannot be hacksawed or drilled and would take so long to "pick" that the burglar would be quicker dismantling the door.
Reliable makes are Chubb and Union. Don't buy foreign made locks unless you are 100% sure of their reputation.
Expect to pay from £30-£50 upwards (unless you get a B&Q Sale offer). With this type of security it is very much the case that you get what you pay for. This is a small amount of money for protection of your property.
Be careful of buying from the internet unless you are comfortable with the retailer. This is a security device that you're buying and is relatively cheap compared to the cost of your property. You don't want to be dealing with anyone 'shady'. Also, if you go to a hardware shop (even B&Q) you will get advice about what you need to complete the installation.
Chubb also make a variant of their locks which use a "registered key". This type of lock uses a key that has a special groove machined into the shaft. The dimensions of this groove are controlled by Chubb so you can't just get a new key cut from a standard blank at your local hardware shop. It needs the registered key number so that the right blank is used. This is an extra security because it means that the bad guys can't just make a quick duplicate of your key without your knowledge. These locks cost more than the standard ones.
The dimension is the depth of the lock into the door. If you have a plain wooden door with broad stiles (the bits that go up and down at the sides) then you can insert an 80 mm lock. If you have a window in the door and so you can't drill out a deep slot without weakening the woodwork then you need the narrower 67 mm lock.
In both cases you need a door that is at least 2.75 cm thick. That should not be a problem. Most external doors are thick enough to take mortice locks.
Make sure that the lock has instructions, sometimes they even have a paper template. Follow the instructions very carefully and don't take any "shortcuts". if the lock isn't fitted properly you'll risk getting a misalignment with the keyholes and the staple (the bit that fits into the frame). Any misalignment may make the lock impossible to use.
You will need a 3/4" wood chisel (very sharp); a light weight hammer; 1" wood bit (for the keyhole through the door frame- you cannot cut a "keyhole shaped" hole - the estucion plates provide the shape); 1/2" wood bit (to drill into the door edge to fit the lock); No2 Pozidriver; 3 or 4 mm drill bit (for the staple long-screw pilots); short spirit level (to align the centre line of the lock at the door edge with the keyholes; tape measure.
Mount the lock as far from glass as possible but it should be no more than 6" above or below the door's mid line so that it resists anyone kicking the bottom of the door. This is even more important if the lock has a built in handle.
If it's your first time then there will be lots of sawdust, noise and swearing so make sure that your spouse is sympathetic and has loads of tea always available.
